Virginia Laparra
Laparra, the former head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office Against Impunity (FECI) in Guatemala, fought against the corrupt justice system in Guatemala. She faced criminal proceedings for her work, which resulted in her spending 680 days in Guatemala’s maximum-security prison and then under house arrest. Despite these hardships, she refused to back down or compromise her integrity. Her arrest and subsequent detention have been widely criticized by human rights.
