Chief Justice Raymond Zondo

Chief Justice Raymond Mnyamezeli Mlungisi Zondo joined the Advisory Board in October 2025. He served as the sixth Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa from April 2022 until his retirement in 2024. Over a distinguished judicial career spanning nearly three decades, he also held positions as Deputy Chief Justice, Justice of the Constitutional Court, and Judge President of the Labour Appeal Court and Labour Court.

Earlier in his career, Chief Justice Zondo practiced law in Durban, where he was a partner at Mathe and Zondo Incorporated and contributed to the work of the Goldstone Commission on Public Violence and Intimidation during South Africa’s democratic transition. He was part of the Ministerial Task Team that drafted the post-apartheid Labour Relations Act of 1995 and later served as the first Chairperson of the Governing Body of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration.

In 2018, he was appointed Chairperson of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture, Corruption and Fraud in the Public Sector, producing landmark findings that strengthened accountability across government institutions.

Chief Justice Zondo holds a B.Iuris and LLB, as well as three LLM degrees in labour, commercial, and patent law. He has received numerous honorary doctorates and awards, including the 2025 Rule of Law Award from the World Justice Project.
