Ambassador Christian Wenaweser joined the Advisory Board in December 2024. Ambassador Wenaweser has served as the Permanent Representative of Liechtenstein to the United Nations in New York since 2002.
From 2020 to 2022, he led Liechtenstein’s efforts at the United Nations to reform the use of the veto in the Security Council (known as the ‘Veto Initiative’), which came to fruition when the General Assembly adopted a resolution by consensus in April 2022.
Under his leadership, States drafted the ACT code of conduct on atrocity crimes which is currently supported by 130 States and, in 2016, Liechtenstein spearheaded the creation of the legal Syria Mechanism (known as the ‘IIIM’) through the General Assembly to support the investigation and prosecution of international crimes since 2011.
From 2008 to 2011, he served as President of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). From 2004 to 2009, he served as Chairman of the Special Working Group on the Crime of Aggression. Other previously held functions include: Vice-President of the 61st session of the UN General Assembly (2006-2007), Vice-Chair of the Open-Ended Working Group on Security Council Reform (2004-2005), Chairman of the Ad hoc Committee on the Scope of Legal Protection under the 1994 Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel (2003-2005), President of the Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (2003) and Chairman of the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee (2002).
Before his posting as Permanent Representative, Ambassador Wenaweser worked as Counselor and Deputy Permanent Representative of Liechtenstein to the UN and as diplomatic officer in the Office for Foreign Affairs in Liechtenstein.
Ambassador Wenaweser studied literature, languages, history and philosophy at Zurich University, and diplomacy at the Institut Universitaire de Hautes Etudes Internationales (IUHEI) in Geneva.
