SUGGESTION BOX

KENYA
William Plowright

William Plowright lives on Gabriola Island, British Columbia, Canada. He is currently a Ph.D Candidate at the University of British Columbia in the Department of Political Science, and he is also a Research Fellow in the Child Soldiers Initiative.

This photograph was taken in Fort Jesus in Mombassa, Kenya. It is a depiction of an anti-corruption program in Kenya, a project by the local government to allow locals and tourists to submit comments or suggestions to fight corruption. Although a program that encourages participation, it is unlikely to lead to long-term change and therefore symbolizes the need to move beyond token efforts to combat corruption.

The Allard Prize Photography Competition jury selected this photo as it represents a symbol of (sometimes fruitless) efforts made to combat corruption.
