This photo depicts the “standing man” protest, which started in Istanbul on May 28, 2013 sparked by outrage at the brutal eviction of a sit in at Istanbul’s Taksim Gezi Park protesting the park’s demolition. Supporting protests and strikes subsequently took place across Turkey protesting a wide range of concerns, at the core of which were issues of freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and the freedom of assembly.
