WORKERS CONFRONTED BY POLICE

Colombia
Nadege Mazars
2012

Nadege Mazars was born in France and currently resides in Colombia.  Self-taught, Nadege has ten years of experience as an independent graphic designer.  He views photography as a powerfully creative instrument to allow one to become closer to real-life experiences with the objective of sharing it with others.

This photo illustrates the difficult exercise of union rights in Colombia, which for several years has led the world in union activists’ murders (according to the International Trade Union Confederation, at least 18 union activists were murdered in 2012, and 359 received death threats).  This photo was taken in October, 2012 during the strike of oil workers supported by the Unión Sindical Obrera.

The Allard Prize Photo Competition jury selected this photo as it captures the determination of a group of people to fight for the rights they deserve.
