On January 6, 2021, the U.S. Capitol was attacked by supporters of Republican President Donald Trump. The attackers forced their way into the U.S. Congress, seeking to keep President Trump in power by preventing a joint session of the United States Congress from counting the electoral college votes to formalize the victory of president-elect Joseph Biden. The following week, the U.S. House of Representatives impeached President Trump for inciting insurrection.
